On this Pottery workshop you will have a wonderful opportunity to use traditional handbuilding methods to create beautiful pots that can be fired with ease at home. This course is suitable for beginners as well as those who have used clay before.

Course Details

  • Learn simple pot building methods
  • Pinch Pots
  • Coil Pots
  • Slab pots
  • Effects and importance of burnishing
  • Decoration techniques
  • Building of sawdust kiln - basic construction materials
  • Understanding effects of different grades of sawdust/shavings
  • Using salt and copper oxide to achieve slight colour changes
  • Firing kiln with a couple of pieces of work from each student
  • Finishing pots to bring out the subtle colour variation
  • Inlay of colour to enhance decoration

Melanie - Course Tutor

 

Melanie Osborne has lived in North Devon all her life and has been involved in ceramics for over 30 years. She trained as a production thrower then set up her own studio near Hartland to work in stoneware and porcelain continuing to work intermittently in between bringing up a family. Currently Melanie is renovating her workshop and enjoys sharing her love of pottery with others, passing on her knowledge and enthusiasm for working with clay in her pottery workshops.
